Focus to hit stands Sept. 1
A new magazine devoted to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender news and information is scheduled to debut Sept. 1 with “The Coming Out Issue.”
Cooper Young-based Ray Rico Freelance will publish “Focus Magazine” online and bimonthly in print to target the LGBT population in Memphis and the region, Rico said. It will be distributed free at area businesses, but subscribers can receive the print edition by mail for $1 an issue.
“The LGBT population in Memphis and regionally is being overlooked when it comes to news that is just for LGBT persons. There are many organizations that serve the needs of this audience, but nothing that is published regularly with aggregated content that is completely LGBT-centric,” Rico said.
A Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality for same sex couples makes the time ripe for the new publication, Rico said. “The ruling is a game changer and bolsters the ability for LGBT products and interests to become mainstream instead of marginalized,” he said.
Rico said the agency will work closely with LGBT-focused groups including Friends For Life, Memphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center, Tennessee Equality Project and Mid-South Pride. A portion of profits will be donated to nonprofits serving the community.
Rico’s design agency has been in expansion mode. It recently doubled its office space and staff at 2294 Young.
